Discovery Communications is a global media company that provides content across multiple distribution platforms throughout the world. Extending beyond traditional TV to all screens, Discovery reaches 3 billion viewers in more than 220 countries and territories. The company’s portfolio boasts premium brands such as Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery and OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network).
Discovery Channel required a Xbox 360 application for Animal Planet LIVE, an online video experience with multiple live streams. The goal of this project was to deliver an Xbox 360 application for Discovery Channel consistent with the content and branding of the property but which harnesses the power, features and engaging design of the Xbox 360 platform.
Develop a high quality video experience utilizing HLS format live video. The TV Highlights utilize a looping HLS Playlist and include the ability to toggle between multiple players/cameras. This high quality experience is supported by advertisements and syncs across multiple platforms. The Xbox 360 application also includes video playback, dynamic application updates, advertisement support and analytics.
The application was architected to allow for video feed updates to occur on the back-end without requiring code changes. Referencing the website www.apl.tv, wireframes were created for the Xbox 360 application, which aligned Animal Planet’s requested features with Xbox 360 functionality.
